Issue - March 2010

It’s once again time for our Growth 100 list in the South West, and the annual fast-growth listing makes for fascinating reading. It is an eclectic collection of businesses, taking in every kind of business, from cheesemakers to defence companies to boutique hotel chains. In nearly every case the figures we have analysed – the latest filings with Companies House – take in at least the first half of the downturn in the UK economy we have all lived through. Not surprisingly, the fast growth registered by many companies leading up to the end of the boom in 2008 has been hard to maintain, but it’s striking how many businesses shrugged off the worst of the gloom. The March issue also contains an interview with 4Networking’s founder Brad Burton and a detailed look at Plymouth’s economy.

Market jitters

Market jitters

Not much in life is certain. Just ask New Look and Merlin Entertainments, which in recent weeks have confidently announced plans to float only to have to change tack within days, faced with the reality of wobbly stock markets and less than enthusiastic fund managers. Neither of them got so far as embarking on the so-called road show for investment institutions that precedes a float.
Beyond the sea

Beyond the sea

Creative companies are being urged to look abroad for opportunities. Christian Annesley finds out how they can to make the leap.
That vision thing

That vision thing

Recession or no recession, Plymouth has plenty of reasons for optimism as the city’s Mackay Vision gradually takes shape. Kurt Jacobs reports on a year of progress.
