Writersout will have Myspace impact - Gould

Publishing business Writersout.com could do for literature what Myspace did for music, according to key investor Joshua Gould, the 27-year-old chief commercial officer of Leeds-based thebigword Group. Gould told Insider the launch of the site, which allows writers to publish, share and sell their work, is imminent and has celebrities including Sarah Palin on board.

David Cameron has launched StartUp Britain, a campaign which aims to help new entrepreneurs. More than 60 brands have pledged millions of pounds to support the project which is offering backing worth about £1,500 in areas including IT training and internet advertising.

FSA in CPP probe
York-based credit insurance business CPP Group is being investigated by the Financial Services Authority, it has revealed. The company said it is "in discussions with the FSA" about "certain issues surrounding the sale of the group's card protection and identity protection products". It has suspended sales of its identity theft product and issued a profit warning.

Avacta nets Japanese distribution deal
York-based biotechnology business Avacta Group has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with £5.8bn-turnover Japanese company DKSH Japan. The agreement is for the distribution of Optim, Avacta's protein analysis sytem.

Xeros in a spin after award success
University of Leeds spin-out Xeros has won Best Technological Breakthrough at the first Climate Week Awards for its washing machine which minimises water usage. The success follows on from Xeros being named second in the top 50 "2010 Best Inventions" by TIME magazine.

Augean on track despite adverse weather
Augean has said its results for the year to 31 December 2010 were slightly ahead of expectations despite the impact of "extremely adverse weather" on trading. Pre-tax profit at the Wetherby-based hazardous waste business had fallen by £900,000 to £400,000, while revenue including landfill tax was slightly up at £34.1m.
