Leeds awards £30m West Academy contract
Leeds City Council has awarded a £30m contract to design and build the new Leeds West Academy to Interserve. The project is part of the third phase of the Building Schools for the Future programme and the new academy will provide 1,200 places for pupils aged 11-16 and 300 for those over 16. The academy, being built on the site of the Intake High School Arts College in Bramley, is sponsored by Edutrust Academies Charitable Trust and is scheduled to open in September 2011. Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "The new Leeds West Academy building will be another brilliant 21st century learning environment where children and young people can achieve success and reach their full potential."

Woodheads Seeds harvested by Wynnstay
Woodheads Seeds, the Selby-based cereal and grass seed producer, has been bought by AIM-listed Wynnstay for £2.6m, potentially rising to more than £3.3m. Jonathan Woodhead, managing director of the family-run business that has traded for over 200 years, believes the acquisition will secure its long-term future. Woodheads was advised by Gordons and Brown Butler. For the year to 30 April 2009, Woodheads’ revenue was £15.87m against profit of £0.57m. For Insider comment, click here.

Asda finally get local
Following yesterday's news that Asda has swooped for 193 Netto stores in a £778m deal, Yorkshire Business Insider editor Jim Pendrill mulls over the impact this will have both on the company and the wider supermarket environment in his latest blog. Recalling the Tesco buyout of 1,200 T&S Stores in 2002, Jim comments: "The quiet revolution in the convenience store market over the past decade has been one of the most significant ever in UK retailing." PM to visit Yorkshire
David Cameron will visit Yorkshire today to deliver a speech on the economy. In his first major speech as prime minister, Cameron will outline the need to “create more balanced growth, get Britain working and ensure our whole country shares in rising prosperity”. Cameron is expected to highlight the importance of manufacturing and enterprise. However, Miles Templeman, director general of the Institute of Directors has warned the government’s action on capital gains tax will be the “key test of the government’s pro-business credentials”.

Straight’s order book “at record levels”
Straight, the Leeds based recycling specialist, expects to post strong results at the end of its financial year. The business confirmed it has a record order book and high levels of trading. Furthermore, it said the integration of Helesi’s UK business, which it acquired in March 2010, is “progressing well and to schedule”.

Surgical Innovations in five-year deal
Surgical Innovations (SI), based in Leeds, has signed a five-year worldwide contract with Teleflex Medical. SI will produce articulating reusable handles with bespoke laparoscopic instrumentation to be used in keyhole surgery. SI will retain all the IP for its design, with Teleflex able to use this IP for sales in Europe and potentially the US. Earlier this month SI delivered the largest contract its industrial division has received, worth £616,000.

Profits up at EDP
Electronic Data Processing, headquartered in Sheffield, has posted improved profits for the six months to 31 March 2010. Adjusted profit was up 8.5 per cent to £330,000 from 2009, against turnover of £2.77m. It attributed profit growth to cost-saving measures implemented in the previous year. Shareholders will receive a dividend of 0.713p, the same as last year.

Hat-trick of awards for The Mansion
The team behind recently refurbished Dine at the Mansion venue in Leeds has been presented with an award at the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Awards. The team won the Leisure and Tourism category, making it the third award for the property since January.

Leeds’ businesses head to London
Business leaders from Leeds descended on the capital this week to showcase the city as a business tourism sector. The ‘Leeds in London’ business event was organised by Marketing Leeds to coincide with the Chelsea Flower show. Representatives from Leeds’ conference venues including Leeds United, Radisson Blu and The Hilton met with 40 London-based conference buyers with the aim of bringing future business to Leeds.

Well Met appoints new conference and events officer
Well Met Conferencing at Leeds Metropolitan University has appointed Lisa Holt as its new conference and events officer. Holt joins from the UK Centre for Events Management where she gained experience of organising a wide range of events.

Work begins at Elland Road on Centenary Pavilion
Work began this week at the 21,500 sq ft Conference and Exhibition Centre at Elland Road with a £2m project set to create a venue able to cater for 1,600 delegates. The centre, which will be renamed the Centenary Pavilion, will double in size with a capacity to seat 1,450 for banquets. The self-contained facility will feature an open space with no pillars, an inbuilt kitchen and two bars.

Conference Leeds wins the World Cup
Conference Leeds, the official convention bureau for Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Wakefield and Calderdale, won the Mash Media World Cup held last week at Leeds United FC. Mash Media is a publisher for the exhibition, event and conference industry, and its World Cup, a footballing contest between members of the business tourism industry, attracted event organisers, conference buyers and venues including Leeds Marriot and de Vere Oulton Hall, to Elland Road. Ex-players Graham Roberts, Steve Sedgley and Stuart McCall acted as floating ringers for the competing teams.

Funding deal helps The Envelope Works relocate
The Envelope Works has used a £570,000 NatWest loan to enable its relocation to a £1m factory in the West Craven Business Park in Earby. The relocation from the envelope producer’s former Halifax premises will create five jobs at the company in addition to the 19 employees who are moving with the business.
