Clegg: Yorks carries 'hopes of whole country'

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg told South Yorkshire that the "hopes of the whole country are genuinely on what you can achieve". Speaking at last night’s Made in Sheffield Awards, he said he was "convinced with every fibre in (his) being" that manufacturing would be at the forefront of a new model of sustainable growth. Tigers eye £50m deal after development agreement
Super League club Castleford Tigers have entered into an exclusive development agreement to turn their current ground at Wheldon Road into a large format food store. Opus Land (North) and its financial partner Palmer Capital is working with the Tigers to obtain approval for the scheme in a deal expected to be worth in the region of £50m.

Leeds teams unite for RL World Cup bid
Sporting organisations across Leeds are uniting with Leeds City Council to submit a bid to become a host city for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. A successful bid would be a boost for the tourism industry with the world cup games expected to bring economic benefits to the UK of between £30m to £50m, according to the authority.

Botham hails £85m Ordsall Chord decision
Network Rail’s programme sponsor Graham Botham has hailed the government’s backing of the £85m Ordsall Chord – a stretch of rail linking Victoria and Piccadilly stations in Manchester – as “tremendously good news” for the region. But he stressed that it was only the first step in delivering the Northern Hub project – the £530m trans-Pennine rail scheme that could revolutionise rail infrastructure across the North.
