Hull developments on hold
A string of major development schemes in Hull are on hold and could face the axe in the wake of swingeing public sector cuts. City councillor John Robinson, cabinet portfolio holder for image and culture, told an Insider debate in the city that big regeneration proposals in the city “are not going to happen”. Cllr Robinson was responding to questions over the future of the Fruit Market, a planned 470,000 sq ft mixed use waterfront development, and Albion Square, a 364,00 sq ft mixed use development in the city centre. Said Cllr Robinson: “If you take the Fruit Market site we want to encourage smaller business start-ups in this area. The existing scheme will not happen in the near future.” The uncertainty comes ahead of the closure of regeneration body Hull Forward in the city which had been driving many of the schemes. For a full review of the Insider debate look out for the July issue of Yorkshire Business Insider.

Sheffield is below the UK average for business creation, coming 46th out of the UK’s 50 biggest towns and cities, according to research by Sheffield accountancy firm UHY Wingfield Slater. The survey identified that Sheffield formed one fewer business than it lost per 10,000 people in the year to 1 January 2009. UHY Wingfield Slater partner John Wingfield said that the statistics suggested Sheffield should be spared the worst of government cutbacks to support the creation of new businesses.
