Grants culture is over - Newman
Small businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber have been told to forget the ‘grants culture’. Speaking at Insider’s Power 100 round table, James Newman, chairman of the Sheffield city region LEP and of Finance Yorkshire, said: “Everyone needs to realise that the grants culture is gone. We have to wean small companies off just getting a grant, except in the very early stages of a good idea.”

Apprentice star slams tokenism
Yorkshire-born Apprentice winner and entrepreneur Michelle Dewberry has told Insider companies should not be forced to appoint token women to the board to fulfil quotas. Dewberry was commenting on the report from Lord Davies, which said FTSE 100 companies must more than double the female board members by 2015 or face government measures. Davies has not recommended to impose quotas, but has hinted it is an option if voluntary measures fail.

Halifax boost with Lloyds back in black
Halifax's parent company, the part-nationalised Lloyds Banking Group, has returned to profit. The bank, which is 41 per cent owned by the taxpayer, has reported pre-tax profits of £2.21bn for the year ended 31 December 2010 - up from 2009's £6.3bn loss. Halifax's cash ISAs and 'Clarity' cards were singled out for praise in the results.

Arla turnover reaches £1.5bn
Leeds-based dairy business Arla Foods has said its UK turnover reached £1.5bn during the year ended December 2010 as it made good progress towards its growth strategy. However, the business added that it expected the milk market would remain highly competitive in 2011.
