Yorkshire Building Society moves in on N&P
Yorkshire Building Society is closing in on merging with rival Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. The Bradford-based lender has said talks are taking place with the smaller East of England society about a merger, subject to the completion of due diligence.

Lending falls while businesses pay back debt

High-speed rail will "completely reshape" Yorkshire economy
High-speed rail presents a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to "completely reshape the economic map of Yorkshire". That was the message from transport secretary Philip Hammond who used a meeting with business leaders in Sheffield to passionately promote his plans which he says will cut travel times from Leeds to London by one hour.

Thousands of millionaires in Yorkshire
The number of millionaires in Yorkshire will grow one-third by 2020, according to new statistics. Barclays Wealth, which carried out the survey, said the region currently boasts 44,000 millionaires - and this has shot up by 16 per cent in the past two years.

Sheffield-based ITM Power has won a $30,000 (£18,500) contract with the NextEnergy Center of Detroit in the US. The energy storage and clean fuel business is to provide analysis for the potential of small hydrogen fuelling cars in European and Asian markets.

Mortgage lending is “stuck in a rut” says CML
Mortgage lending is “stuck in a rut” according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). A survey by the council said that lending in February was an estimated £9.5bn, which is almost identical to January’s gross lending figure of £9.48bn. The figure is only marginally higher than the £9.42bn recorded in February 2010.
