UK Coal slumps to 'unacceptable' £125m loss
UK Coal has reported a pre-tax loss of £124.6m for 2010 in what the company has called a "further year of poor operational performance". The Doncaster-based coal mining giant said it is taking "immediate and difficult action" to improve performance. It added that safety performance has been "unacceptable".

Haulage business snaps up rival
Haulage company M Kettlewell (Melmerby) has acquired rival business Allen W Brown and Co in a move that secured 15 jobs. The North Yorkshire business was backed by Yorkshire Bank.

YBS budgeted for N&P fines
Yorkshire Building Society acquisition target Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has been fined £1.4m by the Financial Services Authority for mis-selling Keydata products to 3,200 people. The society has agreed to make related compensation payments of £51m, but a spokesman for YBS told Insider it was continuing with its due diligence and had fully taken the possibility of a fine into account.

Weed control business Railclear has targeted international expansion after switching its banking to HSBC. As part of the deal, Goole-based Railclear has secured a £1.5m invoice discounting facility.

Five-fold profits rise at Surgical Innovations
Surgical Innovations Group has reported a 487 per cent growth in pre-tax profits. The company posted a profit of £1.5m for the year to 31 December 2011. The company said it is actively looking for acquisition opportunities.
