Losses widen at SIG after "a tale of two halves"
SIG, the pan-European supplier of insulation and specialist construction products based in Sheffield, has reported "a tale of two halves" for its financial year to 31 December 2010, albeit with adverse weather conditions negatively impacting the beginning and end to the year. Curtailed activity in construction at the start of the year was countered by stabilising markets as the year progressed, but revenue fell by 2 per cent to £2.67bn, while SIG's losses before tax widened to £81m from £55m in 2009.

Boparan increases Northern Foods stake
Chicken entrepreneur Ranjit Boparan has increased his stake in Northern Foods. Boparan has acquired or agreed to take over 70.01 per cent of the share capital of the Leeds-based retailer, upping last week’s announcement that he was to purchase a 48.25 per cent stake.

Recycling business expands with HSBC deal
Leeds Paper Recycling will open what it claims will be Leeds’ first super materials recycling facility next month, creating 30 jobs. The move to new premises has been backed by funding from HSBC.

Premier Farnell continues to grow
Revenue and profit has gone up at industrial components supplier Premier Farnell. In its full-year results for the year ended 30 January 2011, its revenue grew 21.4 per cent to £990.8m from £795.3m the previous year.

Clarion pleased with "steady" turnover
Leeds law firm Clarion has said it is "pleased" with its turnover of £6.7m for the year to 13 May 2010. The firm, which launched four years ago, added its performance was solid "against the backdrop of the recession".

Sheffield can be global centre for nuclear - EDF
Alan Cumming, procurement director for EDF Energy’s nuclear new build programme in the UK, has said that "Sheffield should become a global centre for the nuclear sector" because of the expertise and quality-driven engineering in the city.

£600m Sevenstone scheme takes step forward
The stalled £600m Sevenstone retail scheme has taken a step forward after Sheffield City Council and developer Hammerson agreed terms to execute a compulsory purchase order by the end of July. The council will commit £10m to acquiring land, while Hammerson will underwrite the compulsory purchase order and additional costs.
