Convention told Leeds needs a "kick-start"
In keeping with its ‘can-do’ theme this year, Yorkshire’s International Business Convention kicked off this morning with the cry that Leeds itself was in need of a kick-start. In his opening address convention chief executive Mike Firth made special mention of Yorkshire Forward chief executive Tom Riordan’s pending move to head up Leeds City Council. Many in the region are pinning high hopes on the move which they hope will give Leeds a stronger voice in Whitehall and nationally, and help drive through key economic development projects. Firth said: “Leeds needs a kick-start. We have got the right man for the job.” Headline speaker later this afternoon at the Harrogate convention is Sir David Frost, while guests this morning heard from Michelle Mone, creator of the Ultimo Bra business, and Peter Burkill, the pilot who just managed to land his stricken BA 777 when engines failed on its descent into Heathrow two years ago.

World Cup viewing highlights “digital divide”, says PwC
As the World Cup kicks off, a PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) poll has revealed only 7 per cent of fans in Yorkshire & Humber will watch the action online, half the amount in London. PwC says this highlights the UK’s “digital divide”, and Arif Ahmad, partner at PwC in Yorkshire & Humberside, said: “Broadband access, quality and speeds in urban areas, particularly the country’s capital, exceed those in rural parts. Promises have been made of broadband trebling current speeds – but this still seems regionally patchy.”
