Forum streamlined to maximise impact - Hopkins
Yorkshire businessman Carl Hopkins has told Insider the Entrepreneurs' Forum launched by Vince Cable has been broken down into three groups to maximise its impact. Hopkins, who is working with the start-up team, said he was impressed with the progress being made on the new Business Link website, set to be launched this autumn, which will be a practical guide rather than a signposting service.

Poundstretcher splashes out on Alworths
Poundstretcher has bought Alworths from administrators at Leonard Curtis. The Leeds-based budget retailer has bought 15 of the 17 Alworths stores.

Silentnight deal saves business
Bed manufacturer Silentnight, which has 250 staff at its Batley production site, said its future is secure this morning after clinching investment from HIG Europe, the European arm of private equity investment firm HIG Capital.

YBS coy over Rock
Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) has played down reports it is in direct competition with Coventry Building Society to buy the 'good' part of Northern Rock. This was despite chief executive Iain Cornish calling for the remutualisation of the publicly-owned Rock.

Coated abrasives business Abacon has been sold to Bibielle (UK). The corporate team of law firm Taylor&Emmet advised Sheffield-based Abacon on the disposal.

Optare narrows losses and confirms move
Leeds bus manufacturer Optare has narrowed its losses and confirmed a move to a bigger factory. It has agreed a 17-year lease for a 140,000 sq ft factory at Sherburn in Elmet - 11 miles from its current site at Crossgates in Leeds - with work set to start in September.

Wassenburg buys Smithy Wood unit
Wassenburg Medical Devices has acquired an 8,000 sq ft unit at Smithy Wood Business Park in Sheffield. The Wassenburg deal means only one unit remains at the 50-acre development.

Day takes helm at DLA
Sarah Day has taken over as office managing partner at DLA Piper in Leeds. Day, who also heads the Leeds finance and projects team and is a member of the firm's international board, replaces Neil McLean who has retired after 12 years in the role.

The number of businesses being declared insolvent in England and Wales has increased by nearly 4 per cent during the first quarter of 2011, according to The Insolvency Service.
