Construction jobs at risk by VAT rise - FMB
The Federation of Master Builders has criticised the government's decision to raise VAT in January, claiming it will result in the loss of 7,500 jobs in the construction sector. Helen Osgood, the acting regional director for FMB Yorkshire and Trent, told Insider the government's drive for energy-efficient homes, the Green Deal, could also be threatened by the VAT rise.

Begbies strikes deal for Hamiltons
Begbies Traynor Group has acquired Sheffield-based insolvency practitioner Hamiltons. The Sheffield firm’s partners, Adrian Graham and Deborah Lockwood, who together owned the firm, will join Begbies as partners and bring all of their existing staff with them to join the group.

Fenner seals Australian deal
Fenner Dunlop Conveyor Services, the subsidiary of Hessle-based polymer engineering company Fenner, has entered a joint venture with Australian business BBV, in a move which will lead to the acquisition of 100 per cent of the business and assets of BBV.

M&A market improving - PKF
The merger and acquisition sector in Yorkshire has made some improvement in the latter half of 2010, according to accountancy firm PKF, with the renewable and food sectors expected to experience deal flow going forward. However, the Yorkshire-based firm said there were factors, including the fear of a double dip, still suppressing dealmaking.

Poundworld to open 100th store
Yorkshire-based retail chain Poundworld will open its 100th store this weekend. Located in Nottingham's Broadmarsh Centre, it will be the 27th store Poundworld has opened this year as part of an expansion drive that has created approximately 800 jobs.
