Fight for ‘transformational’ rail schemes, says Hammond

High speed rail, coupled with Network Rail’s £530m Northern Hub plans, could have a “transformational” effect on the region’s economy, transport secretary Philip Hammond has said. But speaking to Insider he urged business leaders to redouble their efforts and fight for the schemes – or else risk losing out to opponents from the South. Insider is campaigning for Network Rail’s Northern Hub bid to be accepted in full.

Council hits back at Pollards closure claims
Sheffield City Council has hit back at claims it was responsible for the closure of Pollards, the city's oldest shop which shut its doors earlier this week after 132 years of business. Pollards owner Simon Bower had told Insider massively reduced footfall caused by the delayed Sevenstone regeneration project "strangled" his business.

Weather hits Just Car Credit margins
Extreme weather conditions and a "variability of repair volumes" put pressure on margins at Goole-headquartered Just Car Clinics, it reported today. The car repair company reported a £47,000 drop in pre-tax profit for 2010 from £1.15m to £1.11m though turnover increased 8.6 per cent to £46.54m, it said in its preliminary results.

Revenue growth expected at Avacta
York-based biotechnology business Avacta Group has said it expects to report solid underlying revenue growth for the first-half of its financial year with a "significant reduction" in the level of losses.

SIV to host month of sporting events
Sheffield International Venues is set to host a series of sporting events this month as part of the year of sport taking place in the city. It is hoped Sheffield's line-up for 2011, which includes eight world-level events and 20 national championships, will confirm the city as one of the main UK sporting destinations in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics and bring £6m into the economy.
