Sterecycle doubles Rotherham plant

Waste-recycling technology company Sterecycle is to double the size of its Yorkshire plant after raising £10m to roll out its environmentally friendly autoclave technology. The company will increase capacity at its plant based on the former British Steel site in Rotherham from 100,000 to 200,000 tonnes per year by late 2010, equivalent to the waste produced by 400,000 people. It will take waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham local authorities as well as commercial waste, and the investment will create 20 jobs. Some of the proceeds will be used for development of Sterecycle’s second site in Cardiff, and the company plans to build further plants in the UK over the next few years. Sterecycle’s founder Duncan Grierson said: “This latest round confirms that, despite the challenging economic environment, there is considerable interest in waste treatment technology. Our proven process, now operating at commercial scale for over 18 months, is ripe for rolling out around the UK.”

Unite urges Kraft to come clean on cuts

Unite, the union which represents Cadbury and Kraft workers in the UK and Ireland, has told Kraft to come clean about its intentions for the merged group's workforce before Cadbury shareholders vote on the revised offer tomorrow. Unite said Kraft's £22bn debt will mean there is an "irresistible imperative" to cut costs by cutting jobs, claiming that it was Kraft's policy to acquire new businesses by borrowing and paying down the debt with plant closures and job losses. It said the company has closed 35 sites between 2003 and 2008, with the loss of some 20,000 jobs globally. Unite's national officer for food and drink, Jennie Formby, said: "With the purchase of Cadbury sure to be completed in the next 24 hours, Kraft can no longer hide behind the secrecy of UK takeover rules. The company must come clean on its plans because workers are being left to dread the worst." Cadbury Trebor Bassett employs about 800 people in its Liquorice Allsorts factory in Sheffield.
