Davidson unveils £30m eco-lift
Environment minister Jane Davidson has revealed plans for a £30m eco-scheme which will “kick-start the economy” by creating new green jobs and training opportunities. The Arbed scheme promises to create jobs, combat climate change and tackle fuel poverty, and will provide contracts to local companies. The scheme is the largest of its kind to be launched in the UK, and aims to deliver renewable energy to 6,000 properties by March 2011.

Wrexham and Merthyr win £2.5m on the lottery
Two Welsh towns will receive a cash injection of £2.5m as part of a regeneration scheme. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will make the donations to Pontmorlais in Merthyr Tydfil and Cefn Mawr in Wrexham to help the communities recover from economic and social decline. In Cefn Mawr, buildings will be repaired in Crane Street and Well Street. And in Pontmorlais, the fund will support work on buildings including Soar chapel.

Andrews outlines streamlined education scheme
A report calculating the cost of education across Wales has been unveiled by education minister Leighton Andrews. Andrews’ aim is to move more of the £4.1bn spent on education from support services to the front line. The report suggests simplifying the structure of grant schemes and exploring the development of more regional groups sharing educational support in order to move more money directly into classrooms.

EJP to chair WMC
Wales Millennium Centre has appointed Sir Emyr Jones Parry as chairman after Lord Rowe-Beddoe announced his retirement. He will assume the role in January 2011, having spent the last three years as chairman of the All Wales Convention. Lord Rowe-Beddoe is keen to remain involved with the centre, which is home to eight of Wales’s leading arts and cultural organisations, and will take up a life president role.
