New air routes planned for Anglesey
Passengers will be able to fly direct from Anglesey to Dublin or the London area under plans being drawn up by Anglesey Council and the Welsh Assembly Government. The pair will shortly issue a route development brief for airlines to build on the popularity of the Valley airfield to Cardiff route run by Highland Airways. But Sasha Wynn Davies, head of economic development at the council, said that, unlike the Cardiff link, new routes would not receive a subsidy. Speaking at Insider’s North Wales Economic Forum, she said: “We are looking at route development at the moment in terms of Dublin and connections with the south east of England. There is potential there.”

Providers sought for broadband link
A £30m broadband communications “motorway” for north Wales will be launched at Bangor’s Technium Cast centre on 27 November. The Welsh Assembly Government will unveil the FibreSpeed network linking business parks in the region to high-speed telecommunications services. The Assembly is expected to invite service providers to bid to get involved in the fibre optic network, which will bring high bandwidth service prices down to London levels.
Builders back green charter
More than 40 business and construction groups have signed up to a zero and low-carbon building charter drawn up by the Sustainable Development Commission, the Design Commission for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government. The “coalition of the willing”, proposed by environment, sustainability and housing minister Jane Davidson, was approved by the Federation of Master Builders, the National House-Building Council, the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment and CBI Wales. The coalition will help develop low and zero-carbon buildings ahead of the UK government’s target to ensure all new homes are zero carbon by 2016 and the Assembly’s similar ambition for Wales by 2011.
Connor gets the Works
Blaenau Gwent Council and the Assembly have appointed Leanne Connor as business manager at the Works, the £300m redevelopment of the former Ebbw Vale steelworks site. She will work with local companies to help them win new business and take advantage of opportunities arising from the landmark scheme. She previously managed the council's business services team.

Hart’s health plan
Welsh NHS trusts and boards will be abolished and replaced by seven local health bodies under plans unveiled by health minister Edwina Hart. The bodies will be more like health boards, a model which Hart said fitted the Assembly’s policy of abolishing the internal market in local health services. The new NHS local bodies will be set up as shadow organisations in June 2009, with a view to becoming fully operational by October 2009. Hart said: “I am also determined that we open up membership of boards to a wider range of individuals. There is a pool of talent in Wales that we need to foster and then deploy.”
Williams to run NHS
Paul Williams, chief executive of Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Trust, is to lead the NHS in Wales following the retirement of Ann Lloyd, NHS chief executive. Williams will be seconded to the Welsh Assembly Government for up to two years to lead restructuring plans. He will take up his post on 1 December.

CBI wants consultation on new rules
The Welsh Assembly Government should work more closely with the private sector on new regulations as it seeks further powers, says the CBI. The call comes as the Assembly consults on a Regulatory Impact Assessment Code for Wales-only legislation. CBI Wales director David Rosser said the Senedd had to subject laws to rigorous cost/benefit analysis and consider alternatives to convince industry that it could use powers responsibly.
