Friar's Walk may miss Ryder Cup deadline
John Burrows, the chief executive of Newport Unlimited, has suggested the Friar's Walk project - the centrepiece of the city's regeneration plan - is unlikely to be open in time for the 2010 Ryder Cup, despite developer Modus recently receiving £25m from London-based Delph. Delays in getting work under way will mean the mixed-use development will not be ready in time for the golf tournament at the Celtic Manor. However, Burrows played down the importance of the event to Friar's Walk. "The Ryder Cup's bearing on it is irrelevant," he said. "In reality, people attending the tournament will not be coming into the town - they'll be ferried from park and ride sites." He added: "We've always maintained that we would like it to be completed by the time the Ryder Cup starts, but it's not a disaster if it isn't. But that's not to say I wouldn't want it to be open over summer 2010."
