Social firms need to join forces, says Bennett
Social enterprises in Wales need to raise their game and build consortia if they are to win big public sector contracts, John Bennett, the head of the Welsh Social Enterprise Coalition has said. Social enterprises – companies with an ethical purpose, structure or employment policy – are seen by some as a “third way” in providing public services. WSEC chief executive John Bennett told Insider there was merit in the idea but warned social enterprise was not a panacea for all ills.

Ragan adds Fusion to ice hockey group
Paul Ragan, the serial entrepreneneur, has bought Fusion, the Cardiff events and fundraising consultancy run by Victoria Ward. Fusion will merge with Ragan’s Rink Corp, which owns the Cardiff Devils and Sheffield Steelers ice hockey clubs.

Acorn picks up Draig Personnel
Recruitment and training company Acorn Group has acquired Draig Personnel. Newport-based Acorn, which recently reported turnover of £93.5m for 2010, said it was on the lookout for further takeover opportunities across the UK.

Amazing Retreats advances in Wales

NWP nets £3.5m contract wins
NWP Electrical and Mechanical, a sub-contractor based in Conwy, has secured three construction projects worth £3.5m. The business said the contract wins would allow it to create apprenticeships.
