Chambers come out in favour of Assembly powers
The two top chambers of commerce in Wales have given their support to full law-making powers for the Welsh Assembly, ahead of the March vote on the subject. South Wales Chamber of Commerce and West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce told Insider they supported fuller powers for the Senedd in its areas of responsibility. They are the first business groups to give a firm view on law-making powers since campaigning for the referendum began.

UK Steel helps Baraka serve up investment
Baraka Foods of Gelli in the Rhondda has invested £500,000 in a new extension and freezer capacity, including £80,000 third-round funding from UK Steel Enterprise. The investment comes as turnover at the South Wales food producer has increased to more than £5m – a rise of 45 per cent in two years.

Riverlea Tractors, a vehicle supplier based in Pembrokeshire, hailed new methods of contacting customers as it posted an increased pre-tax profit of £1m for the nine months to September 2010.

HWM back in profit despite leaking sales
Leak detection and control equipment developer HWM-Water returned to the black for the year to 3 April 2010, posting a pre-tax profit of £370,019, compared to its £58,380 loss in the previous year. The improvement came despite an 8.7 per cent drop in sales at the Cwmbran company.

Furniture maker moves into the Gateway
Furniture Origins (UK), a furniture and glassware maker, has taken a 10-year lease on the Gateway building in Abercynon, near Pontypridd. It leased the 59,000 sq ft development from property group Hawtin.

Business opportunities are the best ever, says Heseltine
Lord Heseltine, the chairman of the UK government’s Regional Growth Fund, used a business gathering in Cardiff to paint an upbeat picture of UK and Welsh economic prospects. He told the Cardiff Business Club last night: “I don’t accept we are in a gloomy situation. The world is as exciting as I have ever known it.”

Glamorgan Uni downloads £4.9m app centre
The University of Glamorgan will host a £4.9m centre for developing mobile phone applications and services, after the venture was backed by £2.4m from the EU’s Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government.
