Jones aims for 100 meg broadband in urban Wales
Companies in Wales should be able to access broadband services at 100 Mbps (megabits per second) in urban areas and 30 Mbps in rural areas by 2016, far in excess of current speeds, deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has said. The Assembly Government expects to get at least 30 per cent of the investment it needs to upgrade broadband services from the private sector, and has been studying a similar scheme in Cornwall.

Huntsman invests in Llanelli
Huntsman, the US-owned specialty chemicals producer, will today launch a £3.5m investment in expansion of its performance products division in Llanelli. The investment is intended to increase capacity by about 50 per cent and will protect 46 jobs.

Sogefi makes loss in "challenging conditions"
Sogefi Filtration, an automotive filter equipment maker in Llantrisant, South Wales, said "challenging marketing conditions" impacted on its performance in the year to 31 December 2009. A turnover drop of £13m to £63.4m contributed to a pre-tax loss of £1.2m.

Broomfield counts on MHA
South Wales business consultancy Broomfield & Alexander has joined MHA (MacIntye Hudson Association), an association of independent accountancy and advisory firms. Broomfield, which has offices in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea, said the move will allow it to offer more services to its clients and tender for national contracts.

React plans Merthyr move
React Support Services, a Cardiff company which provides homes for people with mental health or learning difficulties, is to expand to Merthyr Tydfil. The company was set up in Cardiff with £400,000 from the Royal Bank of Scotland’s NatWest arm.

Buy As You View puts £3m into technology
Buy As You View, the retail and finance company based in Bridgend, has invested £3m in technology for its staff and customers. The outlay funded remotely adjustable meters in homes and laptop computers for account managers.

Profits up but revenues drop at Inver
Revenue at Inver Energy (UK), the Cardiff-based oil wholesale and distribution business, fell by £9m to £39.9m during the year to December. But the company managed to increase pre-tax profits to £325,518, up from £304,662 in 2008.

Geo links Wales and Ireland
Geo, the digital business which operates the Welsh Assembly Government's FibreSpeed network, has entered a venture with ESB Telecom to connect the UK with Ireland. Subsea fibre optic cable will connect Anglesey to Dublin and go live in 2011.

TV institute gets funds for Ebbw Vale centre
The University of Wales has secured £450,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government for its Institute for Advanced Broadcasting (IAB) in Newport. The funding will be used to set up a centre in Ebbw Vale.
