IP frameworks needed to drive revenue, says Cable
Universities should look to their counterparts at Manchester, Cambridge and Imperial College London to establish stronger frameworks around intellectual property (IP), according to business secretary Vince Cable. Speaking last week at Queen Mary, University of London, he said departmental budget cuts meant that universities would need to do more with less in the future.

Don't cut R&D now, says Smith
The chief executive of Universities UK last week defended academic investment, despite impending public sector spending cuts. Speaking at the organisation’s annual conference at Cranfield University, Steve Smith said cutting back on the UK’s research and development base now “would be the equivalent of the government cutting back on the production of Spitfires in the early summer of 1940”.

Online search secures European investment
A team from Sheffield Hallam University working on online search technology has secured £305,000 of funding from the European Commission. The finance is part of a £3.3m collaborative project led by German technology business SAP to look at how improved data searching can impact business.

Cancer screening spin-out wins pharma contract
Prescos, a spin-out from the University of Nottingham, has secured a contract with Belgian pharmaceutical company Janssen Pharmaceutica. The company provides services that allow drugs to be screened early in the research process for anti-cancer activity. Major pharmaceutical companies can then identify those that are potentially beneficial.

Birmingham continues software focus
Birmingham City University has signed a deal to work with software developer 5G Technologies. The collaboration, which will take place with the school of computing, telecommunications and networks, is designed to support government policy on energy efficiency.

Strathclyde spins out number five
The University of Strathclyde is celebrating its fifth spin-out of 2010 following a deal to bring next-generation marine technologies to market. Nautricity, which develops tidal power turbines, has secured investment from First Tech, a privately owned company in Aberdeen.
