Universities tell Insider: 'Tuition fees rise is right'
After university funding was slashed in the CSR, the majority of institutions contacted by Insider believe the rise in tuition fees to a maximum of £9,000 per year would ensure they continue to offer world class standards of education. In turn, they argue this would allow talent honed by higher education to drive economic recovery. However, concerns have been raised that the increased costs of a university education could deter prospective students.

Professor Martin Binks has been appointed dean of Nottingham University Business School. He works at the university as a professor of entrepreneurial development and has "pioneered" the university’s connections with small and medium sized businesses in the region.

Keegan: Leeds university will strengthen enterprise
The University of Leeds should strengthen its enterprise offering despite budgetary pressures, according to Richard Keegan, programme manager (enterprise and innovation) at the university. Keegan, who spoke to Insider following the launch of a new specialist enterprise facility, also believes falling graduate job numbers will lead to more young entrepreneurs.

Oxford Cryosystems in MBO
Oxford Cryosystems has been bought out by management following a £500,000 loan package from the Co-operative Bank. Oxford Cryosystems, which began business in a basement room at the University of Oxford in 1985, has grown to be a market leader in developing applications for low temperature devices used in x-ray crystallography.

EDRF leads £9m investment in Falmouth University academy
The European Regional Development Fund is investing £6.7m in the University College Falmouth’s new Academy for Innovation & Research. Additional investment of £1.5m from the South West RDA and £700,000 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England nudges public sector investment in the new academy close to £9m. The academy will open at the Tremough Campus in spring 2012.

Construction starts on £30m science centre
Work has started on Staffordshire University’s Science and Technology Centre. The £30m development, which is being built by Miller Construction, is set to be completed in 2012.

Universities sign business investment sponsorship deal
The universities of Southampton and Portsmouth have signed a sponsorship deal to support investment network meetings and investor training workshops in their respective cities from next year.

Lancaster University acquires The Work Foundation
Lancaster University has acquired The Work Foundation, the not-for-profit organisation that provides consultancy and research to business and government organisations, after it was issued with a winding up petition in the High Court. The deal safeguards 43 jobs at The Work Foundation’s Westminster-based head office, including its executive vice chairman Will Hutton.

£4m electron beam system heads for Leeds
A £4m high-resolution electon-beam lithography system is being installed at the University of Leeds. The system is widely used to pattern wires, dots, rings and sophisticated integrated structures on a submicton length scale.

Incubation conference to be held in Liverpool
Liverpool will host the ninth annual conference on best practices in science-based incubation next month. The event will take place on 18 and 19 November at the Merseyside Maritime Museum and is being organised by The Technopolicy Network in collaboration with Liverpool Science Park.
