University agenda must change, says report
Universities will have to compromise their preferred agendas in order to meet the economic needs of society, according to a report. The future of research, which was released last week by sector body Universities UK, said institutions would need to “critically review underlying culture and prejudices”.

Institutions will fail, say higher education leaders
Nearly two thirds of university vice chancellors believe that funding cuts will lead to failing institutions across the sector. In a survey by PA Consulting 74 per cent said the new age of austerity would reduce the number of universities but none said that they would be involved in such changes.

BPP becomes 'university college'
Private education provider BPP has been awarded university college status by the government. BPP College of Professional Studies, which offers degrees in business and law, will now be known as BPP University College. It is the first time a private institution has been awarded the title since the University of Buckingham was created in 1976.

HEFCE funds green-thinking projects
Eleven projects aimed at delivering sustainable development have won the backing of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Following a call for project proposals in December 2009, HEFCE is allocating the money from its Leadership, Governance and Management Fund, which is a £10m, three-year pot that came to an end in July.

European money backs aerospace build
The University of Nottingham has been awarded a £3.6m grant to establish the Institute of Aerospace Technology. The money, from the European Regional Development Fund, will help to fund the construction of the research facility at the University’s Innovation Park. It will house around 100 staff.

Cameron seizes Indian education opportunity
As part of ongoing efforts to boost relations between India and the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron has agreed an extension to the UK India Education Research Initiative. During his recent visit to the Subcontinent the Prime Minister confirmed his support for the programme alongside Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.

Queen’s take on Rutherford to boost research and enterprise
Scott Rutherford has been appointed director of research and enterprise at Queen’s University Belfast. He will take up the post from Imperial College London but is currently on secondment to HEFCE, where he has been coordinating the development of the Research Excellence Framework.

Private Sector Partners signs up to academic link
Business group Private Sector Partners (PSP) has signed an agreement with the North West Universities Association (NWUA) to boost knowledge transfer. A longer term ambition is research to facilitate innovation by firms.

Halliburton gets closer to Aberdeen
Energy giant Halliburton has stepped up its collaboration with the University of Aberdeen. The company has signed a partnership agreement to donate new equipment and nurture talent for the oil and gas industry. This follows software totalling £7m donated by Halliburton since 2001.

New work-based learning course at Bristol
Bristol University’s graduate school of education has launched a new Master’s programme designed to support professional enquiry in the workplace. The part-time MSc in System Learning and Leadership will start in November and is set to help leaders identify and develop their “learning power, harness collective intelligence, understand systems and facilitate inquiry-based learning”.
