Insider South Yorkshire Dealmakers Dinner 2008
Abel thanks the other side
Patrick Abel was named Dealmaker of the Year last night at the second Insider South Yorkshire Dealmakers Dinner. Abel, corporate finance partner at PKF in Sheffield, has led on many of the regions largest deals this year, including the management buyout at ESS, which was also named Deal of the Year. He won the award which, like all the others in this years awards, was voted on by his industry peers. However Abel paid tribute to Chris Sellars at Hart Shaw, a professional rival who was advising the opposite party on the ESS deal, in talking about his award. Its testament to the value of the corporate finance teams in South Yorkshire that we could complete such a deal as ESS on our own and in such a time frame, he said. But I am also glad we could work with Chris Sellars and his professional team. We were up against trade buyers here there was interest from as far away as Texas but we managed to model a deal that was right for everybody. Other dealmakers in the running for the award at the ceremony, hosted by Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf and Brittas Empire fame, were Andy Cocker, formerly of Alliance and Leicester but since the start of this week with Bank of Scotland, Steve Knowles of Knowles Warwick and Dave Harris of Barber Harrison & Platt. The award was sponsored by DLA Piper.

The other winners
Lifetime Achievement Award

Winner Andrew Coombe
Coombe, who retired from  Keeble Hawson in April this year after 21 years advising on mergers and acquisitions throughout South Yorkshire and beyond, received his award to a standing  ovation from the audience at the Hotel Mercure St Paul's in Sheffield. "It's been an immense pleasure for me to have worked in South Yorkshire with people like you in this room," he told the audience.

He later told Insider that he felt a new excitement about the potential South Yorkshire and Sheffield had to offer. “This city has been a sleeping giant for too long. In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s we accounted for much of the national GNP. But since then with the coal and the steel falling off and thanks to the actions of the then council we have completely slid off the map, and it has taken a long time to recover. But we are recovering now. It’s great to see all the young people transferring their skills to new sectors such as financial services. I only wish I was 20 years younger.”

Deal of the Year

Winner ESS MBO

This £56m deal saw Baird Capital Partners put a stake in this Sheffield company, which supplies steel and engineering products to the oil industry. Yorkshire Bank also backed the deal, which saw founding partner Alex Miller hand over the reins to a new management team. But it was perhaps the presence of an all-South Yorkhsire based advice team that really persuaded voters to back this one. Patrick Abel at PKF led the deal and introduced Baird to the management team. Hart Shaw advised the vendor, while legal advice came from both HLW and DLA Piper. Miller told Insider that he was very keen to keep the deal local in gratitude to his adopted city. "As a Scot who came to Sheffield 26 years ago I knew I had to keep everything in Sheffield," he said. "This is second home to me."

The deal sees Miller exit the company he founded, and the 49-year-old was being very guarded about what he might do next, although he did not rule out the possibility of starting all over again with a new company.
