AESSEAL brings manufacturing back
AESSEAL, the manufacturer of mechanical seals, has made three acquisitions, resulting in the company moving some Indian manufacturing operations to its Mangham Road site in Rotherham. AESSEAL has bought Standard Seals, the sixth-largest Indian mechanical seal company, which will combine with the sales of AESSEAL India to make AESSEAL the fourth or fifth-largest mechanical seal manufacturer in India. AESSEAL has also acquired Texas-based Mechanical Seal and Service (MSS) and one of its distributors in Norway, AESSEAL Norway, which means it has operations in 69 locations with fully or majority owned subsidiaries in 31 countries.

Seeking deals
Martin Greene Ravden (MGR), the London and Sheffield-based financial management and accountancy practice, is looking for acquisition targets in Yorkshire. The firm, which has traditionally specialised in the media, has expanded its portfolio to include corporate finance and tax divisions. It has appointed Jo Haigh as head of corporate finance, opening an office in Sheffield, and Chris McGowan as head of tax in Sheffield. Haigh said: The next stage is for MGR to acquire an additional business, based in Yorkshire, to allow us to offer a full portfolio of accountancy services from the Sheffield office. graphic

More reasons for Birley to manufacture
Sheffield-based design and manufacturing company Birley Manufacturing has won a contract with Morrisons to refurbish five former Safeway cafes in Airdrie, Bude, Caerphilly, Cambuslang and Edinburgh. This could be extended to 95 more cafes in 2009. graphic
Factory of the Future invests in virtual reality
The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has installed a second virtual reality system in its Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future. The AMRC uses a portable StereoWorks passive Virtual Reality (VR) system, which allows groups of people to see virtual objects and environments in 3D. The latest system is capable of handling large CAD files. graphic
Sheffield second best for finance
Sheffield has been named the second-best city for the availability of financial incentives for business after London in the UK Cities Monitor, published by real estate adviser Cushman & Wakefield. The city was overall ranked 10th out of 15 cities in a survey of 200 of the UKs largest companies. It came third behind Leeds and Manchester as the best city for a back office function; joint third with Belfast for the best city for value for money office space, behind Leeds and Cardiff; and third best for cost of staff after Leeds and Newcastle. graphic
Creativesheffield sponsors film
Creativesheffield has signed a sponsorship deal with Warp Films, Domino Records and Bang Bang Films for the forthcoming Arctic Monkeys film Arctic Monkeys at The Apollo. The film of the bands last gig will be screened at select cinemas for one night only on 14 October. Brendan Moffett, strategic marketing director, said: Creativesheffield is continuing to invest in genuine Sheffield stories instead of advertising slogans and logos, which hold no value. graphic
PDM goes green
Doncaster-based food processor PDM (Prosper de Mulder) Group is improving its environmental credentials by installing its second renewable energy plant. The company has received planning permission for the plant at its site in Widnes, Cheshire. The £25m biomass plant will double renewable energy production, using 150,000 tonnes of food and drink waste to create enough energy to power 20,000 homes. graphic

Purple pad for new businesses in Sheffield
The purplehotel Meadowhall Sheffield has been topped out and is expected to open in November 2008. Paul Mitchell, finance director for the Real Hotel Company, said purplehotels was attracted by the growth potential of the area as a result of regeneration. The 103-bedroom no frills chic hotel will service the new businesses coming into Rotherham and Sheffield. graphic
Village green out the way of Penistone plans
Penistone Town Council has revoked plans to apply for village green status for its recreation ground to give way to Dransfield Properties' £15m town-centre development plans. The council decided to preserve the area earlier in the year but on receipt of another piece of land from the developer, which can be incorporated into the recreation ground, the council revoked the village green restrictions. graphic

Halliwells expands corporate team
Halliwells has expanded its Sheffield corporate practice with Adam Hulme, who has transferred from Halliwells head office in Manchester, and trainee Jemma Brimblecombe. Halliwells set up its corporate practice with Neil Thompson in January 2008 and has advised on 11 significant deals in its first four months, including management buyouts for part of Amco Corporation and Sheffield-based Mayflower Engineering. graphic
Chief economist at Business Yorkshire
Dennis Turner, chief economist at HSBC, will be a keynote speaker at the Business Yorkshire event on 1 and 2 October at Doncaster racecourse. Turner, who has been with HSBC since 1978, will share his knowledge of regional economic trends and financial issues, and give guidance for facing difficult trading conditions. graphic
