Sheffield’s new Master Cutler has warned the city faces a “tough battle ahead” as it looks to achieve economic growth. Professor William Speirs, who was installed last month, said the city must put wealth creation ahead of employment.

Fusion company nets £770,000 in funding round
Diurnal, a portfolio company of Sheffield-based university commercialisation business Fusion IP, has successfully completed a £770,000 funding round that will enable it to complete trials on its Chronocort product.

ZOO hails iTunes system after first-half profit
ZOO Digital, the Sheffield-based software provider for the film entertainment industry, has posted pre-tax profit of $388,000 for the six months to 30 September. It is the first time the business has posted a first-half profit, a performance which was based on revenue of $8.1m. ZOO said it was particularly pleased with a new iTunes production toolset it was marketing.

CPS hails "strong" start despite profits dip
Pre-tax profit at Clyde Process Solutions has dropped by 45 per cent for the six months to 31 August. The business posted profit of £1.7m, down from £3m in the first-half of 2009, but said its performance had been strong in a challenging economic environment.

Newburgh wins ten-year nuclear contract
Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering has secured a ten-year multimillion contract to supply in-core reactor fuel components for use at existing UK nuclear power stations. The contract was awarded by Lancashire-based Westinghouse Electric UK and Springfields Fuels.

Ask4, the Sheffield-based internet service provider, has secured an agreement with Digital Region that will allow it to provide super-fast broadband services to the South Yorkshire region.

Yorkshire-based insolvency practitioner Wilson Field has expanded its workforce by nearly 20 per cent in the last year, appointing nine new staff to work across all sectors of the company bringing the total workforce to 51.

Council appoints Wates as preferred bidder
Doncaster Council has named Wates Construction as preferred bidder for the rebuilding project at Campsmount Technology College. An electrical fault led to a major fire at the college in December last year and the school has been in temporary accommodation since March.

South Yorkshire-based Foys Solicitors has appointed lawyer Louise Wylie to help drive the firm’s expanding commercial property service. Wylie joins with many years’ experience in the region's commercial property market, much of it gained through the Sheffield practice of Wake Smith and Tofield.

Southdale completes Places for People development
Halifax-based construction business Southdale has officially handed over a £4.9m housing project in Sheffield to Places for People, the local housing provider. The development comprises 41 homes for rent and shared ownership, constructed to eco-friendly design.
