Convince your region first, says minister
South Yorkshire needs to persuade its own region before asking central government for help, said John Healey, minister for Communities and Local Government, at a regeneration event in Rotherham. Businesses quizzed the Wentworth MP about central government investment in Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield in light of the new runway at Heathrow. But Healey said the battle needs to be fought in persuading the rest of the region that it’s a local priority first. “It is quite reasonable for the Department for Transport to say that if you can’t carry the case for being an investment priority in your own region, why should we give it consideration here?”

Forgemasters increases output by 17 per cent
Sheffield Forgemasters International Limited (SFIL) has increased its production output by making its own largest pouring ladles in a £500,000 project. The company produced four 105-tonne pouring ladles, upgrading on the current fleet of 90-tonne ladles, which will increase the steel division's output by 17 per cent. The ladles, which are fabricated in steel and lined with refractory, measure up at 4.5 metres in height, 3.3 metres in diameter and weigh slightly more than 55 tonnes without any steel.
Venture simulates business life
Business software company Venture Simulations has developed a South Yorkshire edition of its business simulation SimVenture for Sheffield Enterprise Agency (SENTA). SimVenture, which allows people to set up and run their own virtual company to learn about business and being an entrepreneur, will be distributed in South Yorkshire exclusively by SENTA.
Goy joins Capita Hartshead
Capita Hartshead has appointed Helena Goy as business development manager following a reorganisation of the existing team. Tony Moriarty, former business development manager, will now focus on developing Capita Hartshead’s Full Services business. Goy joins from Rpmi where she spent four years transforming the business from an in-house pensions team to a third-party administration business.
CenFRA gets expert advice
The centre for food robotics and automation, CenFRA, has enlisted the help of a team of industry specialists and academic professionals to provide the food sector with access to the latest technical knowledge and support. The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is chaired by Mike Wilson, president of the British Automation and Robotics Association (BARA).

Digital excellence awarded
Insider is accepting nominations for the Yorkshire Digital Awards 2009, to be held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on 7 May 2009. The awards, which recognise the achievements of Yorkshire companies in the digital arena, will also include a new category for best new talent. This category will be open to any student in their final year of study on a creative or digital course in a Yorkshire institution who can demonstrate by their project work that they are the “next big thing”. Recycling plant doubles
Waste management company Sterecycle has been granted permission to expand operations at its Rotherham site where it uses steam to process unsorted household waste. The plans will double the plant's handling capacity to 200,000 tonnes per year by late 2010 and create up to 20 jobs.
Property partner for Taylor Bracewell
Doncaster law firm Taylor Bracewell has made solicitor Peter Caswell partner, specialising in property, trusts and probate. Caswell joined the business in 2003 from the Leeds legal scene. His appointment is part of the firm’s restructuring to focus on its core business areas.
