Greater regional cooperation required, says Insider panel
South Yorkshire businesses should link with their counterparts in Leeds and Manchester to form a regional powerhouse, according to the leader of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. Speaking at an Insider post-election debate in Leeds this morning, chamber chief executive Nigel Tomlinson called for closer ties between the city regions. “It is a massive economic powerhouse and for the three to be competing with each other make no sense whatsoever,” he said. “It is achievable if people put aside fairly petty differences.” Rachael Ellis, director of Doncaster-based procurement consultancy Ocurem, said more co-operation between businesses in northern England could see the region win more contracts from firms based in the South-East. But she added: “No-one works together. No-one wants to bring that action plan together. That is my biggest issue.” Mark Goldstone, head of corporate relations at Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said transport was a major challenge, in particular east-to-west rail links. “In the short-term we just need to move people around the region better,” he said. For a full report on the debate, see the June issue of Yorkshire Business Insider.
