Creative Sheffield to shun MIPIM
Creative Sheffield will be slashing its presence at property conferences, such as MIPIM, this year, chief executive Ian Bromley has confirmed after releasing a ten-point plan of things the city development company will, and wont, be doing. Bromley said: Its really a matter of money and resources. For the last five years or so Sheffield has had a big presence, which was the right thing to do at the time. But there are not as many projects here now and we have a lot of office space so we will focus our limited resources on conferences geared towards the people who will fill that space. He said Creative Sheffield will still have a couple of people there with Yorkshire Forward, participating in their Yorkshire and Humber cities events.

Downturn ânot matching convention'
The current economic downturn is failing to follow a conventional pattern, according to Richard Lewney from Cambridge Econometrics. Speaking yesterday at Insiders first Northern Strategy Forum in Leeds, Lewney said that regions that benefit most from a boom usually suffer the most when the economy slides, but both Yorkshire and the North East of England had seen proportionally much steeper falls in house prices and rises in unemployment than might have been expected from their grown in the past few years. Also at the forum, sponsored by Baker Tilly, Chris Murray from Core Cities explained why his organisation was lobbying for his eight member cities to be able to retain any uptake from business rates that might be generated from local economic growth. He said cities in the UK were currently only able to retain five per cent of their local tax uptake, while successful European cities retained nearly 45 per cent.
