Think tank gives up on northern cities
The editor of a report that claimed regeneration in northern cities would never succeed and that highly-skilled people in the region should migrate to the south claims northern local authorities are hamstrung by not having sufficient powers to make regeneration work. Oliver Hartwich, who edited the report, said that despite regeneration attempts we had to accept that some cities are just in the wrong spot. Creative Sheffield chief executive Ian Bromley said the report ignored the great work that had been done in the north. If these people had looked at Sheffield ten years ago they probably would have written off Sheffield as a no-hoper, and told Sheffielders to move to London, he said. However, Sheffield has shown that you can revive a city.
