Clegg tops Insider Power 100

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has stormed to the top spot of Insider Power 100 – our annual list of the hundred most influential people in the region. Clegg, in his capacity as the second most powerful person in the country, has risen from 26 last year. He replaces Kevin McCabe at the top of the chart.

SIV to host Arctic Monkeys homecoming gig
Sheffield International Venues is to host the Arctic Monkeys' first “outdoor” event in their hometown this summer. In a coup for the leisure operator, it will manage the two-date Arctic Monkeys plus special guests event at the Don Valley Bowl in June.

Government must plug export gap - BCC
More than two-thirds of companies are failing to export their goods abroad. A British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) survey showed 5,500 companies out of 8,000 do not export anything - partly because they think their products are unsuitable or they have enough business in the UK. The BCC has now called on the government to do more to help businesses trade abroad.

£5m international contract wins for Qualter Hall
South Yorkshire-based engineering company Qualter Hall has secured international contracts worth in excess of £5m. Qualter, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, said exports now account for approximately a quarter of its total business.

Retail sales boost revealed
Retail sales improved in January following a disappointing December, according to figures by the British Retail Consortium. UK retail sales values were up 2.3 per cent on a like-for-like basis from January 2010, when sales had fallen 0.7 per cent.
