The Medical House takes on the US
Sheffield-based drug company The Medical House has developed a disposable autoinjector device to compete with the American EpiPen. The EpiPen dominates the market for autoinjectors, which administer adrenaline in an emergency to allergy sufferers in the event of an anaphylactic shock. But The Medical House is hoping its safer and more user-friendly version could take it on. The company has signed a deal with global pharmaceutical service provider Catalent, which will provide the adrenaline for the device, and Stallergenes, a European biopharmaceutical company, that will sell the product across its network in 13 European countries. The autoinjector will undergo testing and Ian Townsend, chairman of The Medical House, expects it to launch in 2010. If its successful we will also be able to take it to the biggest market in the world the US, he said.

Losses were expected for Fusion IP
Fusion IP, the Sheffield-based intellectual property commercialisation company, has announced increased losses from £3.1m to £5m in its preliminary results to 31 July 2008. Chief executive officer David Baynes said the loss was in line with the budget and reflected the impact of a full year of operating activity in the Cardiff operation as the 2007 figures only included six months of operating costs in Cardiff. The company's operating costs of its growing portfolio of spin-out companies also increased. The company invested £2.7m in 17 of its portfolio companies, underwent two equity exits and CellTran, one of its spin-outs, went into administration in May 2008 because of the poor funding climate. graphic

The initiative to improve train punctuality has included issuing radio-controlled watches and whistles to all staff to emphasise the importance of on-time despatch of trains, and the move to a joint control centre, shared with Network Rail, to improve communication. graphic
