EU-cash and green energy behind Cornwall LEP success
A focus on green energy coupled with the hope it might snare more EU investment is behind the surprise success of Cornwall-Isles of Scilly’s LEP submission. Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’s Empowering Enterprise bid was among 24 proposals for local enterprise partnerships approved by the government yesterday along with the West of England bid which covers Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council, North Somerset Council, and Bath and North East Somerset.

Clegg: radical approach will deliver growth
The government has outlined its plan for promoting economic growth across England and helping those that have been hit hardest by the public spending cuts. Business secretary Vince Cable confirmed that 24 local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) in England have been given the green light, while deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched the £1.4bn regional growth fund. Speaking to Insider, Clegg described the government’s actions as “a radical new approach”.

Innovise buys Expolink’s software arm
The software division of Wiltshire-based Expolink Europe has been bought by Midlands-based IT services provider Innovise for £810,000. Expolink Software, which is based in Chippenham, competes with Innovise in the facilities management, transport and NHS markets.

Five Stokes stores sold to Argyle Trading
Five stores at collapsed Bristol-based greengrocer Stokes have been sold to Argyle Trading. The deal includes the Bath, Brixham, Cowley, Dawlish and Paignton stores, preserving 59 jobs.

Pipex uses EU cash for centre
Devon-based manufacturing firm Pipex has been awarded European funding to construct a product development centre at its base in Plymouth. The South West European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) has provided £90,000 towards the cost of building the new facility – in addition to the £210,000 Pipex has invested – that will enable Pipex to accommodate training, product development and product testing.

Devon-based building firm Michael Thorne Construction has entered administration leading to the loss of 52 jobs. The company has blamed the economic downturn in the construction sector.

House prices fall in the South West
House prices in England and Wales dropped by 0.2 per cent in September, according to the Land Registry. The average price in the South West price dropped 0.7 per cent to £177,351.

Swindon-based flooring company A&M Flooring has taken a unit at South Marton Park in Swindon. The asking price for the 1,210 sq ft unit was £130,000.

Tesco fits out new Bristol store
Tesco has commenced fitting out on a new Tesco Express to be opened later this year in Saltford, near Bristol. The supermarket giant has acquired 501 Bath Road, Saltford on a new 20 year lease at a commencing rental of £35,000 per annum.
