CBI chair: South West region needs just two LEPs
The new chairman of the South West CBI has called for the region to be represented by just two Local Enterprise Partnerships rather than seven, the number of LEP proposals that have been submitted to central government. Jim French, the CEO of Exeter-based airline Flybe, used his speech at the annual CBI dinner in Bristol to argue that too many groupings across such a large region could lead to in-fighting between different areas.

Local firms divided as controversial Bristol Tesco gets green light
Shop-owners in Stokes Croft have given a mixed response to the decision by Bristol City Council to approve two out of the three planning applications needed by supermarket giant Tesco to open a new store in the area.

Unions campaign to save Devonport dockyard
Trade unions have launched a campaign urging the government to protect Devonport dockyard. Devonport, in Plymouth, is Europe's largest naval base and is Devon and Cornwall’s largest private sector employer. The government is considering the dockyard’s future as part of its comprehensive spending review and is expected to release its findings in late October.
