South West 'outperforms' London for new business
The South West is a hotbed for new business and the outlook for the South West in 2011 is strong, according to Mike Papadatos, HSBC's South West commercial director. Papadatos told Insider the South West “led the country for new businesses”. He added: “We did more business in terms of pounds than London did last year.”

Big rewards for NHS innovation
South West NHS innovators have been collectively awarded more than £1m of funding from the Regional Innovation Fund. Projects were given funding between £8,000 and £240,000 to implement their ideas or explore them further.

A University of Exeter business has set up a website so small companies can seek investment from the public. Crowdcube, which is based at the university's innovation centre, makes it possible for people to buy shares in start-ups and growing businesses.

Clegg unveils more RGF details
A second round of bids for the Regional Growth Fund will open on April 12 and successful bids from the first round will be "announced shortly", Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced. He also said that due to the number of "high quality bids" received, the funding allocated to the first round may increase.

Redruth green properties to be built
Nine "energy efficient business units" are being built on the Treleigh Industrial Estate in Redruth. The first unit will be available from June 2011.

Metafab Coatings takes space at Mill Place
Coleford-based Metafab Coatings has let unit 9A at Mill Place in Gloucester on a five year lease. Metafab Coatings will use the unit to provide a range of painting services, including shot blasting, wet painting and polyester powder coating of steel.

Wilsons will move staff to single site
Wilsons Solicitors is set to move its staff to new headquarters in Salisbury after closing four other premises around the city. The move is set to happen in spring 2012, the business said.

Bristol shares regen tips with Russia
A Russian delegation has been digesting advice from Bristol property professionals on ways to generate a city. The visitors, from Tver, were in Bristol as a part of a five-day study tour. The trip was organised by commercial real estate specialist Colliers International, which is advising the Tver Administration on its economic and regeneration strategy.

Spirax-Sarco Engineering reveals profit surge
Cheltenham-based Spirax-Sarco Engineering has revealed that pre-tax profit jumped by 26 per cent to £121.6m in 2010, from £90.2m in 2009. This is according to Spirax-Sarco Engineering’s preliminary results.

Cobham signs $45m agreement
Dorset-based aerospace and defence group Cobham has signed a five-year agreement worth $45m (£27.8m) with Pratt & Whitney – a United Technologies company. The contract is to manufacture advanced products for military aircraft engines.
