The total value of North West deals in the second quarter has slumped to its lowest level since 2005, according to figures released today from The Centre for Management Buy-out Research. The value of regional deals reached £210m in the three months to June, less than half the £535m achieved in quarter one and the lowest quarterly figure since the fourth quarter of 2005. Deals in the £10m to £50m range also leapt, with six deals totalling £169m compared with three deals worth £76m in quarter one.

Cautious outlook for Printing.com
Trafford-based printing franchisor Printing.com has issued a cautious statement ahead of today's AGM following news that it is trading below budget for 2008 but at a higher level than last year. Chairman George Hardie said because the majority of orders were being used for promotional purposes it wasn't surprising, given the economic downturn, that conditions were more difficult. Analysts at Brewin Dolphin have reduced the company's pre-tax profit forecast for March 2009 by £200,000 to £2.5m and by a similar amount to £2.8m in 2010, but still see strong opportunities for cash generation and a strong balance sheet.

Time for property consolidation? Not yet

Will the North West’s commercial property practitioners look to consolidate to better their market position, as Clearwater corporate finance guru Mike Reeves proposed in Insider Wednesday? Probably not. Ben Roberts, investment director at Kenmore, says: “It’s a reasonable point, but consolidation will be limited - people won’t sell unless they have to. But the current economic situation will present some very good buying opportunities for well-financed companies.” GVA Grimley investment director Mark Rawstron said: There will be cash-rich organisations waiting to pick up a bargain. Whether the bottom of the market has been reached yet is a different matter.”
