Revenue down 53 per cent at Takeuchi
Japanese-owned manufacturer Takeuchi MFG (UK), whose UK headquarters have been based in Rochdale since 1981, returned to profit in 2009 despite posting a 53 per cent fall in sales. The company announced revenues of £17.7m for the year to 31 December, down from £37.9m a year earlier. However, profit before tax was £698,500, up from a loss of £647,900 in 2008. The business said it had undergone a restructuring to reduce overheads and increase the flexibility of it operations. The value of machines in stock at the end of 2009 was £4.9m, down from £24.9m a year earlier. Takeuchi said the market for its range of mini excavators “contracted severely” in 2009 and is not expected to make an immediate recovery, citing competition in the UK market as a ongoing risk to its operations.

London could be suburb of Manchester, jokes transport secretary
Transport secretary Lord Adonis told Greater Mancheter Chamber dinner guests last night that the proposed High Speed Rail link between London and Manchester could "treble capacity, cut journey times and redraw the map of Britain". And "think of London as a suburb of Manchester", he joked. The Labour peer, who has dismissed suggestions he could remain in post in a Conservative-Liberal Democrat administration, said the rail project could be accomplished with "the same vision and will that has transformed Manchester".
