Footfall up as Liverpool One wins again
Grosvenor’s £1bn Liverpool One scheme has reported a 10 per cent increase in footfall for the year to date, compared with last year, providing further evidence that the cautious recovery in the UK’s retail industry is continuing. The development, which attracted 24.1 million visitors last year, has also posted a 37 per cent increase in first quarter sales against the same period in 2009. Earlier this week, the Confederation of British Industry found that retailers have reported a third consecutive month of rising sales and expect the positive trend to continue in May. The news comes as Liverpool One won two awards at the International Council for Shopping Centres (ICSC) European conference, held in Prague this week. It scooped the New Development Extra Large award (over 860,000 sq ft) and the ICSC ReStore award for retail regeneration. Estate director Chris Bliss said: “The continued recognition on the international stage is testament to the work of Grosvenor, BDP and the Liverpool One team.”

Stack completes Interconnect integration
Liverpool-based Stack Technology said it has completed the integration of a Knowsley computer network cabling business it acquired last year. Stack bought Interconnect Network Systems, which was founded in 1998, in November. Chairman Jeff Orr said the technology fit between the businesses has been “considerably enhanced” by the deal and the joint client base would provide further opportunities for growth. Stack has recently announced a number of contract wins in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries that should increase sales by 55 per cent.

RIBA president praises city’s architecture
Ruth Reed, the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), has praised the quality of Liverpool’s historic and new architecture during a visit to the city this week. She told Insider: “The centre is so design-led and vibrant. The new museum at Mann Island is wonderfully dynamic and complements the rest of dynamic buildings that the city has to offer. One thing that also strikes me is the quality of the public realm works – the wonderful Victorian buildings are not ringed by traffic jams, but by excellent town squares and public spaces. It has been done with great enthusiasm and consistency.” Reed was visiting Liverpool for the launch of a new book by Stephen Bayley called Liverpool: Shaping The City.
