Online growth brings jobs cuts at Shop Direct
Liverpool home shopping giant Shop Direct Group has announced proposals to close its Crosby call centre and make changes at other group sites, which is expected to result in 1,150 jobs being cut. Chief executive Mark Newton Jones said he hoped to relocate 250 people. “Our business is changing because the way our customers choose to shop with us is changing,” he said. “We anticipate that 70 per cent of our sales will be online by 2010/11 and, therefore, the future of our business is online-led. To maintain this growth, we need to continue to adapt to the needs of our customers.” In its January trading update the group announced sales up 9 per cent for the six-week period, with online sales growth of 44 per cent. Its online business now accounts for 56 per cent of total sales, up from 18 per cent three years ago.
