Production starts at Liverpool palm oil plant
New Britain Palm Oil (NBPOL), one of the world's largest producers of sustainable palm oil, today started production at its new £18m processing plant in Liverpool. The refinery has a capacity to produce between 150,000 to 170,000 tonnes of refined palm oil per year, but this can be “easily doubled” to meet market needs. The annual demand for palm oil in the UK food and personal care market is estimated to be 500,000 tonnes. Chief executive Nick Thompson said: “We have invested in this refinery to address a clear market demand in the UK and Europe for sustainable, traceable palm oil. The establishment of NBPOL’s refinery in Liverpool is, we believe, the first dedicated to segregated, traceable, certified sustainable palm oil.” He added that the business is now in supplier discussions with many well-known UK manufacturers.

However, last night it confirmed that it would not be increasing its latest offer due to “the current economic uncertainty” and the difficulty of valuing Forth Ports’ property assets.

You can leave your hat on…
Liverpool can’t get enough of Marco Pierre White these days, it seems. Not only is the celebrity chef due to open a steakhouse in the new Hotel Indigo, a gas barbecue endorsed by the fiery Yorkshireman has flown off the shelves onto the patios, according to Liverpool home store Taskers. Helped by a giveaway of a free bandana, the barbie concerned has seen sales rocket by 136 per cent. We reckon it’s the bandana effect really, who doesn’t enjoy cooking while looking like Hulk Hogan?

Swing low
Perhaps it was for the best Insider wasn’t asked to blow the dust off its driver for jeweller David M Robinson’s golf day at Royal Birkdale. Baby give it up
Warrington-based Opal, part of TalkTalk, has completed its Give Something Back Week, which involved staff from its eight UK offices giving up a day to raise money for 27 different charities. As should the efforts of the group’s own staff.
