Business leaders back innovation search
As the launch week of this year’s Merseyside Innovation Awards draws to a close, business leaders from across the region have been giving their backing to the annual ceremony. Liverpool City Council leader Joe Anderson said the area had always been a leader but now, more than ever, needs innovative businesses to help stimulate job creation and grow the economy.

Microvisk raises £6m ahead of product launch
Microvisk Technologies, a medical device company based in North Wales, has raised £6m from investors to help it run clinical trials, expand its research and manufacturing facilities in St Asaph and launch its blood clot test product.

DLA Piper merger to create 'world's biggest law firm'
DLA Piper, which has offices in Manchester and Liverpool, is to merge with an Australian law firm. The deal, set to complete in May, is expected to create the world's biggest law firm by number of lawyers and revenues.

Goonhilly satellite station deal clinched
A deal to restore Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall has been completed. The restored site will be used to transmit messages into deep space for research into the origins of the universe. North West law firm Mace & Jones helped complete a deal.

North West job losses to hit 10,000 – Unite
The public sector job losses tally could reach 10,000 in the North West, the Unite union has warned. It has brandished the latest bout of cuts at Liverpool City Council as “brutal” and said the 1,500 job losses would have a “devastating and lasting adverse impact” as the private is struggling to absorb the cuts.

A new ‘commission’ has been set up that will allow businesses to advise Wirral Council on how they believe the authority can do more to encourage enterprise and make the most of the government’s £1.4bn Regional Growth Fund.

Music mogul Waterman to sit on LEP board
Music mogul Pete Waterman, one third of the pop music hit machine Stock Aitken Waterman, has been unveiled as one of 11 regional figureheads appointed to the board of the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. Almost 100 applications were received for the board, which were drawn from the private, education and voluntary sectors.

Joe Dwek, the prolific North West industrialist, has urged businesses in the region to take advantage of the services offered by Business Link despite the axe looming over the support organisation.

Retail growth is slowing - CBI
The pace of growth in the retail sector is starting to slow, according to the CBI. The business lobbying organisation said sales on the high street generally rose in January compared to a year ago but 37 per cent of retailers polled in a survey said they were faring worse than in 2010.
