JJB chairman to stand down

JJB Sports chairman Sir David Jones is to step down from the company due to “continuing issues with his health”. Jones, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1982, will stay on as a non-executive director but will hand over his executive responsibilities to chief executive Keith Jones. John Clare, the senior independent director of the company, will become acting chairman until a replacement is found. Sir David Jones joined JJB in 2007 and has been widely credited with rescuing the Wigan-based business from the brink of administration via a £100m rights issue and the company voluntary arrangement agreed with its landlords. However, the business continues to be affected by low stock levels. In a statement to the stock exchange this morning, JJB said like-for-like sales have fallen 28 per cent in the year to 24 January although the decline in like-for-like sales did improve over the year, from 37 per cent down in August to 21 per cent down in January 2010. It added that its stores should be fully stocked by April. JJB also announced today that former Olympic rower Sir Matthew Pinsent and the current executive chairman of The Jessop Group, David Adams, will join as non-executive directors.
