S Norton hit by lower turnover
Annual sales have plunged 36 per cent to £146m at Liverpool scrap metal processing business S Norton & Co following subdued demand in its key markets. But the company returned to operating profit during the year and said there were "early signs of promise" of demand returning.

Government set to confirm LEP details
The government is set to reveal the successful local enterprise partnership (LEP) bids tomorrow, it has been confirmed. The public-private bodies will replace the Northwest Regional Development Agency from March 2012.

Administrators expect Southern Care interest
Joint administrators from accountancy firm PKF have said they expect “substantial interest” in the Southern Care Group, which operates nine care homes in North Wales. The company employs 270 people and cares for up to 300 elderly people.

North West councils face staff cuts
Two councils in the North West have confirmed more than 1,200 jobs could be lost following the government’s spending review. Sefton Council said 1,000 jobs are at risk, while 200 staff at Wigan Council are taking voluntary redundancy and early retirement.

Rippleffect gets arty with Hepworth brief
Liverpool digital agency Rippleffect has been appointed to develop a digital marketing campaign for a new £35m art gallery in Yorkshire. The Hepworth Wakefield gallery is set to open next spring.

Thornton Hall invests in new facilities
Thornton Hall Hotel, on the Wirral, has made two major investments to improve its facilities. The investments include a new £30,000 water garden on the hotel’s lawns, which has taken six weeks to build.

Tote doubles profits despite uncertainty
State-owned betting company the Tote, headquartered in Wigan, has shrugged off the ongoing uncertainty over its future by delivering a set of “very satisfactory” results for the financial year to 31 March, with pre-tax profits more than doubling to £13.3m. Chairman Mike Smith said the performance was “much improved” despite turnover falling by more than £150m to £2.75bn. He also praised the government’s “refreshing approach” to resolving its future.

Venture Fields designs revealed
The designs for Venture Fields, the new multimillion-pound leisure scheme in the Widnes Waterfront regeneration zone, have been revealed. Work on the scheme, developed jointly by St Modwen Developments and Halton Borough Council, is to start onsite within weeks.

Smith and Sons instructed on Haymarket Court
Property consultancy Smith and Sons has been appointed to let a Birkenhead town centre office suite at Haymarket Court. The 2,200 sq ft ground floor of the 2004-built block is now available. The floorspace includes seven allocated parking spaces.

Galliford Try secures North West work
Galliford Try has been appointed by the University of Manchester to carry out an £8.1m contract to develop its School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science. The Middlesex-headquartered company has also reached financial close on a £6.1m project to build a new medical centre, library and sixth form facility for Liverpool & Sefton Health Partnership (LSHP).
