Bernstein: We need to go with the grain
Manchester and other parts of the North West need to give the government what it’s looking for when the deadline for local enterprise partnership plans comes around on 6 September, according to city council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein.

Loftus pleased with Deloitte performance
Revenues have dipped slightly at the North West practice of accountancy firm Deloitte. But the firm said each of its divisions performed strongly given the context of the economic environment. Senior partner Patrick Loftus said the results were “very satisfactory” and the North West team could be “cautiously optimistic” about the year ahead.

Parkwood returns to first-half profit
Support services group Parkwood Holdings has returned to profit during the first-half of the year following difficult trading in 2009. The Preston-based company said effective cash management has allowed it to repay loans of £3.3m and maintain a positive cash balance for most of the period.

Cammell Laird forms nuclear partnership with Nuvia
Two businesses in the North West have formed a partnership agreement to “catapult” them to the forefront of the UK’s multibillion pound new nuclear build programme. Merseyside shipbuilder Cammell Laird will work with Warrington nuclear engineering business Nuvia to bid for contracts for the fabrication of heavy modules and components for new nuclear plants.

PNE to give AIM the boot
Preston North End FC are set to cancel their listing on the AIM market. The club’s directors believe the move is “no longer in the best interests of the company or its shareholders to maintain the admission”.

Turnaround continues at M2 Digital
M2 Digital, the managed print services business, has reported a year of solid growth to 31 March after a “challenging” previous year. The Manchester company posted a 23 per cent rise in sales to £30m and a 300 per cent increase in underlying profit to £3.1m.

Halton makes case for Mersey Gateway
Halton Borough Council has revealed its proposals to fund a new bridge over the River Mersey to link Runcorn and Widnes in a bid to win government backing. The council’s Mersey Gateway submission to the government’s spending review contains plans on how the six-lane toll bridge will be funded and the benefits it will bring to the region.
