Penning refuses to be drawn on £530m Northern Hub plans
Transport minister Mike Penning has revealed the government will look closely at Network Rail’s £530m Northern Hub proposals although he refused to be drawn on the level of support in Whitehall for the plans. Speaking to Insider, he said the government was “very aware” of bottlenecks and problems with the rail infrastructure in the North, but added budgetary restraints would determine what projects receive financial backing.

Tate & Lyle sells molasses business
Tate & Lyle has agreed to sell its molasses distribution business for £67m cash to the Northern Irish company W&R Barnett. The deal ends Tate & Lyle’s long association with Merseyside.

Qire makes investment bid
Liverpool technology specialist Qire was one of ten businesses to pitch for venture capital investment at the fourth Software City conference, held at the Hilton Hotel Liverpool. The company was looking for a £3m investment for a 20 to 30 per cent stake in the business.

Everton FC have agreed the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in their history with Thai beer brand Chang. The club have secured a three-year contract extension worth more than £12m.

Liverpool plant oils NBPOL's excellent start
The performance of New Britain Palm Oils' refinery operation in Liverpool has contributed to the business' "excellent" start to the year. NBPOL, one of the world's largest producers of sustainable palm oil, said the plant was producing oil of the "highest standard" and experiencing week-on-week increases in sales and production.

Budget airline Easyjet is to launch a new service to Gibraltar from Liverpool John Lennon Airport next year. Booking for the route has now opened.

NatWest appoints new retail head for the North
NatWest has appointed Tony Brown as the new managing director of retail banking across the North of England. Brown will assume responsibility for more than 3,000 staff and 380 branches operating in NatWest’s retail and personal banking operations in the North.

Screwfix takes Bangor space
Screwfix Direct, a supplier of trade tools, has taken 7,032 sq ft of space at Aurora Property Group’s Gateway Park scheme in Bangor, North Wales. The company has taken two units on a ten-year lease for an undisclosed sum.
