Florrie secures more regeneration cash
The Florence Institute in Liverpool, known as The Florrie, has secured £1.5m from the Northwest European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) that will enable it to undergo an extensive restoration programme. The investment from ERDF, along with an additional £536,000 from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and a £3.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, completes a funding package needed to transform the site into a business and community centre. Once completed, it will provide 9,900 sq ft of workspace for local entrepreneurs and businesses and 2,300 sq ft for events and conferences. Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, said: “This important building is a key part of the area’s heritage and was once at the heart of the local community. This investment will bring it back to life as a key community asset once again.” The project is expected to create 43 new jobs.

Speaking at a Liverpool Business Week event yesterday, organised by Downtown Liverpool in Business, Guy Wallis said that Liverpool needs to capitalise on the cost benefits of being a provincial city, but it has to act now. “Opening an embassy in London needs to happen now, not in November at the end of the Shanghai Expo, we need to be the first city to do it, as people always remember the first,” he said.
