The search to find some of the region’s most innovative businesses is now underway with the launch of the 16th Merseyside Innovation Awards. The awards, open to individuals or companies with fewer than 50 employees, aim to recognise and reward the use of innovation as a means of boosting growth and profitability.

Cities report reveals mixed picture for region
Government reductions to public sector spending has left some towns and cities in the North West among those most likely to suffer the longest from the economic downturn, according to a new report published today by urban policy research group Centre for Cities. The Cities Outlook 2011 report, which assesses built-up or urban areas with a population of 125,000 or more, found that Liverpool in particular is likely to face “significant challenges” in the months ahead.

Research from Begbies Traynor indicates that fewer businesses in the North West are struggling with financial problems than the UK as a whole ahead of the full impact of public sector cuts and tax rises. However, the insolvency specialist said the North West's construction sector had been negatively affected by its reliance on public sector contracts.

North West profit warnings fall
Nineteen profit warnings were issued by listed companies in the North West in 2010, the lowest number recorded in nine years, according to research released today by Ernst & Young. However, the final quarter of the year had a peak of ten warnings, more than double the number recorded in the previous quarter.
