The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) needs more financial backing to support a plan to enhance Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral. Speaking at a pre-show Presidents dinner at the Tatton Flower Show last night, Peter Buckley, RHS president, said: "We have been talking to the University of Liverpool (which owns Ness) but future support has to be on proper financial terms." Separately, Bryan Gray, chairman of the Northwest Regional Development Agency, a strong supporter of the Tatton event, also called on businesses in the region to back events at the show in the future.

City's wall of light
Liverpool turns on a giant media wall tonight that it says rivals London's Piccadilly Circus. Considered to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, the wall in front of Land Securities' St Johns Shopping Centre will greet visitors as they arrive at Lime Street for the next five years. Land Securities has built the giant wall and it will be managed by Ocean Outdoor, a contractor that specialises in premium outdoor advertising. It is as long as five bendy buses and "as tall as two and a half giraffes", says the press release - that's 90m by 13m - and has a high-resolution digital LED screen.
