Jackson Rich ceases trading with 67 redundancies
Jackson Rich & Co, a mechanical and electrical engineering contractor, has ceased trading after entering administration. Joint administrators at BDO confirmed to Insider that 67 employees have been made redundant at the company’s Rochdale headquarters.

Angry Birds publisher taken under EA wing
Macclesfield mobile gaming business Chillingo has been bought by industry giant Electronic Arts (EA) in a deal thought to be worth more than £12m. The company is the publisher of the globally successful Angry Birds game which has sold more than 6.5 million copies around the world.

Lancaster University acquires The Work Foundation
Lancaster University has acquired The Work Foundation, the not-for-profit organisation that provides consultancy and research to business and government organisations, after it was issued with a winding up petition in the High Court. The deal safeguards 43 jobs at The Work Foundation’s Westminster-based head office, including its executive vice chairman Will Hutton.

RES plans £300m biomass plant
Renewable energy developer RES has revealed it plans to build a £300m environmentally-friendly biomass power plant within the Port of Liverpool at Alexandra Dock. The project will generate green electricity for homes and businesses as well as bringing scores of jobs to the area.

Spending cuts could be ‘devastating’ for universities
A 40 per cent cut in higher education budgets over the next four years could have a "devastating effect" on many universities, the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester has warned. Dame Nancy Rothwell said universities are still waiting to learn the full implications of the government's spending review, but it appeared they have been "particularly harshly treated".

Langtree selected as Daresbury partner
Developer Langtree has been selected as the private sector joint venture partner for the development of Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus (SIC). The creation of the joint venture will see the development of around 1 million sq ft of space for science and innovation facilities, high-tech businesses and supporting infrastructure, bringing more than 6,000 new jobs to the area over the next 30 years.

Salford gives Tesco green light
Salford City Council has given the go-ahead for a controversial new Tesco store in Pendleton. The supermarket giant estimates the store will create 600 new jobs in the area.

Morston fills ex-MFI Bolton site
Morston Assets has agreed three pre-lets at the former MFI retail warehouse on Bolton’s Manchester Road. Morston acquired the asset in 2009 and has re-clad the facility while dividing it into four units. Deals have been agreed with Screwfix, Euro Car Parts and gym operator Helio Fitness.
