RGF panel will be 'Scrooge-like', warns Wrigglesworth
The government’s new £1.4bn Regional Growth Fund can have a “considerable impact” on healing the north/south divide, according to Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, the deputy chair of the independent advisory panel that will consider funding proposals. But Wrigglesworth, speaking to Insider ahead of tonight’s deadline for the first round of bids, warned the fund would not be an open pot of money. “A lot of people think we’re Father Christmas, but it will be more like Scrooge,” he said.

Time is running out for entrepreneur Ranjit Boparan if he intends to table an offer for Northern Foods, the owner of Accrington-based Hollands Pies. Boparan was the subject of a 'put or shut up notice' from The Takeover Panel and has until today to make an offer for the food manufacturer.

Activision set to close Bizarre studio
US games developer Activision has revealed it is set to close its Liverpool games studio Bizarre Creations with the loss of about 200 jobs. The studio was put up for sale by Activision in late 2010, but a buyer has not been found.

About 50 people have been made redundant at Manchester furniture and kitchen retailer Johnson & Johnson Furniture after the company entered administration. A further 20 jobs are still at risk.

Peel Energy submits biomass plant application
Peel Energy has submitted a planning application to Cheshire West & Chester Council for a wood fuelled power plant at Ince Park. If granted permission, the biomass plant would generate enough renewable electricity to meet the average needs of 37,000 homes.
